In God We Trust, because one man spoke out

Fun Facts about the United States Mint has a very interesting entry about how "In God We Trust" got on US money. Who says one man can't make a difference?

From Treasury Department records it appears that the first suggestion that God be recognized on U.S. coinage can be traced to a letter addressed to the Secretary of Treasury from a minister in 1861. An Act of Congress, approved on April 11, 1864, authorized the coinage of two-cent coins upon which the motto first appeared.
So one man, writing one letter, has changed the course of history and caused controversy well beyond his own short existence on this earth by sending his thoughts to his public representatives.

Since then there has been much controversy over these three simple words, but the Supreme Court refuses to hear the issue, so we don't actually know if it's constitutional or not.

But it's our country's motto since an act of Congress in 1956 which just goes to show you how far one man's thoughts can affect the rest of us so profoundly simply because he took the time to share how he thought things should be with those who could actually do something about it.

Keep writing those letters and let Congress know what you think! It might just change the world, you never know.
